So far the year 2020 has been a difficult one for everybody, but I am looking forward to "seeing" all my wonderful sharks as we begin this fall semester with URL. Music class will look a little different from a virtual perspective, but I believe we will still be able to have a fun time and I am looking forward to working with our students LIVE via Microsoft TEAMS. We are all in this together, and I am super excited to begin our new chapter with music class at Shakerag. See you soon!
Last year I was completely unprepared to experience the incredible talent I saw in auditions, and so this year I tried to mentally prepare myself and set the bar even higher for our auditions expectations for our 2019 show. "WOW!!" is all I can say after finishing this round of first auditions. Incredibly, the students that came to audition these past two weeks not only met that high bar, they completely surpassed it! We saw over 100 students in 5 days, and more than half of our auditions had scores in the 70's and higher!! Even with the assistance of our theater committee and judges panel, casting this show was unbelievably difficult and we are shocked and humbled by just how many students went above and beyond during this process. It is with incredible excitement that we are happy to announce our 2019 cast for Willy Wonka: Kids! I cannot WAIT for Round 2 Auditions so we can find out who our characters will be!
Thank you again to all the wonderfully talented students that came to audition. Narrowing down so many talented students to a list this small was no easy task, and the theater committee worked collaboratively to consider dozens of factors in the casting process. We were absolutely astounded in the amount of talent we had the privilege of seeing and we are so very proud of everyone that tried out. THANK YOU!
Sign-Ups to Audition for our 2020 Spring Musical are now LIVE! Click the Sign-Up Genius Link to be redirected to the Sign Up page. This virtual Sign-up will CLOSE on Friday October 25 at 5:00pm, so make sure you sign up for an audition time now!
Auditions begin Friday Nov. 1 and run through Friday Nov. 8 (excluding Tuesday, Nov. 5th for Election Day. Students do not report to school this day, so we will not be holding auditions in the afternoon.) These auditions are held AFTER School, so please make plans in advance to decide how the student AND parent can be present for the audition.
If you wish to have your child stay after dismissal for an earlier audition time, you MUST turn in a Dismissal Change form (located on the Spring Musical page). If you are able to have your student return home their usual way first and then RETURN to the school for the audition, we recommend this option to avoid extra dismissal changes. If your student is in an after-school program already, they must have a signed parent permission note to give to the After-School leaders so they can be briefly dismissed for their audition and then return to their program immediately afterward.
Check out the Spring Musical Page or FAQs Page for more info!
Welcome back to school - we are already well into our year, but I wanted to let everyone know about a wonderful musical opportunity called the North Fulton Elementary Honor Chorus (NFEHC)!
This is an audition-only after-school Honor Chorus which invites 4th & 5th grade students from all over north Fulton to come and participate. Students practice on Tuesdays each week at Roswell North Elementary, and they have anywhere from 6-8 performances a year! I highly encourage any interested student to sign up! It's a really great group and I would love to see some Shakerag Sharks represent! Auditions are Tuesday, September 25th, 2019.
For information, read this informational flyer or visit the NEFHC website. If you already feel excited to join, simply sign up for an audition time using this online sign up form! Hope to see some sharks try out!
I am SO PROUD of how well this year's choral clinic performed! Twenty Shakerag Sharks represented proudly and joined a total of 300 students from 19 elementary schools in Fulton County. We raised our voices to celebrate Music in our Schools Month (MiOSM) with some Broadway Classics.
Relive the whole experience by watching the Recap Video, or sing along with your favorites by watching the show again! We hope to have lots more students join us for the 2020 Fulton County Choral Clinic. 'Til next year!! :)
I would like to extend an open invitation for any 4th or 5th grade student to attend the 2019 Annual Fulton County Choral Clinic (FCCC). This special event is hosted every spring in March to celebrate Music In Our Schools Month! 4th and 5th grade singers and chorus students from all over Fulton county join together to perform a collaborative concert for parents, teachers, and EACH OTHER. The event is a special time for these kids to raise their voices and celebrate music!
This year's event will take place on Saturday, March 16th at Dolvin Elementary school and will also feature a very special guest director... YOURS TRULY! If you'd like more information about signing up please visit the Parent Resources Page!
Hello parents and auditioneers! Auditions for Aladdin:Kids is right around the corner, so please take the time to read this whole post!
PLEASE READ THE AUDITION INFORMATION BELOW CAREFULLY.
STUDENTS THAT DO NOT FOLLOW AUDITION PROTOCOL MAY NOT BE PERMITTED TO AUDITION.
1. TURN IN A CHANGE OF TRANSPORTATION FORM for the date of your student(s) audition. If you have one of the earlier slots immediately following dismissal, you may write "Theatre Audition" on the form and the front office will know to send the student to the music hallway. Otherwise you may submit it as "Parent Pick-up". If a form is not turned in, the student will be required to go home their normal way regardless of their audition time.
*Exceptions: Students in Prime Time or Tutor Shop must have a signed permission slip to give to the PT/TS instructors. These students will be dismissed in time for their audition and will return to PT/TS immediately after. If you have a later audition time and plan to go home normally and return to school after, no form is needed. :)
2. PARENT/GUARDIAN MUST BE PRESENT AT THE TIME OF THE CHILD'S AUDITION. Even if your audition is right after dismissal, please plan to "pick up" your student to bring them to the music hallway. Round 1 auditions are only 5 minutes long, so parents must wait with the child in the hallway and then are immediately dismissed to go home afterward.
3. PLEASE PARK IN THE SIDE PARKING LOT AND ENTER THROUGH THE MUSIC HALLWAY SIDE DOOR. A hallway monitor will be present to let in parents and auditioning students. You will not be required to sign in after school hours, so please do not crowd the front office.
4. PLEASE PLAN YOUR ARRIVAL ACCORDINGLY AND BE COURTEOUS OF OTHER FAMILIES. Audition slots are NOT flexible. No one will be permitted to move or change their scheduled audition time on the day of an audition. If you are signed up for a later time slot, please do not arrive and wait in the hallway too early. We must accommodate several auditioning students every day, so to avoiding overcrowding, please plan to arrive no more than 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOUR AWESOME PERFORMANCES!
I'm so excited to start working on this with our students! A LONG, LONG time ago, I actually starred in Aladdin Jr. when I was in middle School (crazy, right?) so I'm now so, so thrilled to bring this around full-circle as the first Disney Musical that I get to direct. For more information on audition and requirements, please check the Resources>Spring Musical Page! Looking forward to a MAGICAL production!
Hello everyone! As we are nearing our up-coming holiday, I just want to extend a HUGE thank you to my new family and friends at Shakerag. You all have welcomed me so readily with open arms and I have never felt more at home!!! :) Every new day has been a joy and I look forward to coming to work every day.
I have some big announcements coming soon, but for now, I just want to say thank you. To do so, here is a video of the sweet song, "Thanks A Lot" by Raffi that I've been singing with the kids this week. Happy (Early) Thanksgiving!
As part of the gradual music progression in Fulton County Schools, we always start our year with Unit 1: Rhythm, Beat, and Meter. This unit focuses on seeing music as a language and learning to read music the same way we begin reading words- putting individual letters together to create longer structures. Music functions in much the same way! Since the beginning of the school year, all our music classes have focused largely on finding a steady beat, feeling different meters, playing ostinatos, reading small chunks of rhythms, and then composing longer structures using rhythmic building blocks.
As we are now finishing up Unit 1 and moving into Unit 2, I am very excited to show off all the hard work the kids have put into their final projects! If you happen to have a chance to visit the music hallway at school, you can expect to see some of the BRILLIANT rhythm compositions created all the way from kindergarten through fourth grade! (Fifth Graders are working on online rhythm writing). The pictures below don't do them justice, but I'm so proud of these kids!
