Welcome to our Recorder Class Page!

4th Grade students will begin our recorder unit in January during our Spring semester, and we are very excited to pioneer a new approach to learning Recorder. We will be operating our unit via the Online Google Classroom platform and students will be submitting videos of their performances as they learn more and more notes on the instrument! More information will be shared about this shortly, but our first order of business is to have students acquire or purchase their very own recorder! Shakerag has recorders available for purchase for $6.50 - this order will include a recorder, a cleaning rod, a fingering chart, a comfort neck strap, and a zip case to store all pieces. If you have not already purchased a recorder and would like to, simply visit www.ShakeragElementary.com and find the link to OSP Online School Payments to purchase your recorder with a debit/credit card. If you prefer to pay with cash/check, visit the Shakerag Music Website to find the Recorder Letter/Order Form which you can turn in with your payment.

1) What is the deadline to buy a recorder? Students have until the end of January to buy or bring a recorder, but we will begin playing the instruments Jan 13-17, 2020. I have a few spare instruments that kids can use if they don't have one and/or forget to bring theirs, but they must stay at school and are *shared* (I clean them after every use, but I know some kids are squeamish about this). Students can also practice with a fake instrument until they can get one to actually keep, but we highly encourage purchasing an instrument as soon as possible!
2) Can kids bring their own recorder from home and/or buy their own from somewhere else? Yes - they must be "Baroque" soprano recorders. Kids are welcome to bring their own but they need to bring it to Miss Petty so it can be approved as the correct style of instrument.
3) Do they have to take their recorders back and forth to music class? Yes - this a traditional unit in which students will have to take their recorders home to practice but bring them to school on music day to play in class. They are responsible for remembering their instruments every week.
