The Spring Musical is an annual event that coincides with Shakerag Elementary's Artist Day at the end of March. All students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade are encouraged to audition and share their talents with our community and school!
When are rehearsals?
ALL REHEARSALS WILL TAKE PLACE ON MONDAYS AND THURSDAYS FROM 2:20-4:00PM. Attendance at every rehearsal is REQUIRED.
Joining this musical is a large time commitment beginning in November until the end of March. If you are planning to travel for an extended period of time or if your student is already involved in other afterschool commitments on Mondays or Thursdays, we kindly ask that you give these schedule commitments due consideration before signing up to audition.
How do Auditions work?
Do to the incredibly high volume of students that wish to join every year, there are three steps to our audition process:
SIGN-UPS: Students interested in auditioning must SIGN-UP for an audition slot. These slots are limited and FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVE. If you do not reserve a spot, you will not be allowed to audition.
AUDITION ROUND 1 - TO BE CAST IN THE SHOW: Students who sign-up will receive instructions to complete a digital audition in which they will all read the same poem and sing a pre-selected song from our show. All the digital videos will be reviewed by a team of Theater Committee members. This committee will select approximately 35-50 cast members based on these auditions. If you pass Round 1, you're in the show!
AUDITION ROUND 2 - TO ASSIGN CHARACTER ROLES: Once we have a cast selected, students will receive their scripts and instructions on how to audition for which role they would like to play in the show. In these auditions, students will choose what lines and songs to read based on the character they hope to get. The Theater Committee will use Round 2 auditions to determine character assignments for the show.
Do the Auditions need to be memorized?
Since auditions are completed virtually, memorization is highly RECOMMENDED but not required. However, for the song portion, students will be asked to sing independently without the support vocals in the background, so make sure you practice with both the practice track and the accompaniment track!
Does it cost money to participate?
Yes. There is a mandatory $25 participation fee to assist in cost for royalties for the show, props, and set-building. Students are also required to provide their own costumes (or parts thereof) for their assigned character.
When will the shows be performed?
The dates of the performances will include two evening shows on Wednesday and Thursday of the last week in March. We will also perform two matinee performances on Artist's Day. The Artist Day performances are intended for student audiences only, so we encourage parents to come to the evening show.
